Alienware Area51 Threadripper Review: Specs, Features, Price

Alienware Area51 Threadripper
Alienware Area51 Threadripper

TheAlienware Area51 Threadripper has always been a massive gaming desktop, but this year, it will be the only pre-built PC using AMD’s latest Threadripper processors. That means Alienware will be the sole major hardware manufacturer with exclusive access to AMD’s Ryzen Threadripper 1950X and the company’s other high-core count CPUs.

The base version of Alienware Area 51 Threadripper cost $2,699 when it was released, and costs are currently hovering around that mark. But, after four years, is it still worthwhile? We purchased ours four years ago and have put it through its paces, both with typical wear and tear and with relentless gaming.

Overview Alienware Area51 Threadripper

The metal frame of the Alienware Area51 Threadripper Edition is coated in molded plastic panels. The design is the same as it was in 2015. The system is an irregular hexagon with three short sides and three longer sides, rather than the traditional rectangular box found in most desktop PCs. The silver domed left and right side panels are silver, while the black plastic back and front panels include cooling slats.

In all dimensions, it dwarfs towers like the Origin Neuron (17.8 by nine by 15.7 inches) and Velocity Micro Raptor Z95 (17.5 by 7.25 by 20.5). The massive Asus ROG GT51 is somewhat taller but narrower and shallower (23.1 by 10.31 by 23), whereas the blocky HP Omen X is nearly twice as wide (20.3 by 19.9 by 16). The bottom line is that you’ll have to make way for this oddly formed behemoth. Fortunately, each corner of the chassis includes a handle to assist you in repositioning its 62-pound mass.

Design and Build quality

Since its initial release in 2014, Alienware Area51 Threadripper triad design has yet to undergo significant modification, yet it has not become stale. Even HP has yet to attempt to release a more bizarre PC, including the HP Omen X, a cuboid desktop that protrudes from the side.

We wouldn’t classify Alienware’s flagship desktop as tiny, even while the Area 51 isn’t as big as certain dual-system cases like the EVGA DG-87 or Cooler Master’s resurrected Cosmos II 25th Anniversary Edition. Everything about this desktop is massive, from Area 51’s empty chassis weighing 61.73 lbs (28 kg) to its side panels, which may also be used as heat shields.

Naturally, this large brute is also intelligent. To improve airflow, Ienware Area51 Threadripper angles every component inside at a 45-degree tip. This enables the system to push air directly to the GPU(s) blower-style fan and pull air straight towards the CPU liquid-cooler.

Performance and Features

The 16-core AMD Ryzen Alienware Threadripper 1950X in the Area 51 isn’t merely a showpiece; it works hard. This processor is the most powerful computer we’ve ever tested, with four times as many cores as any pre-built PC we’ve ever examined.

Alienware Area51 Threadripper outperforms the Corsair One and MSI Aegis 3, equipped with the newest quad-core, seventh-generation Intel CPUs, by having significantly higher benchmark scores and in-game frame-rate counts.

Because of its last-generation Intel Core i7-6850K Extreme processor, the Origin Millennium performs better than the Area 51 in graphically demanding benchmarks. However, this is mainly because it has two Nvidia GTX 1080 GPUs configured in SLI.

Even though the lienware Area51 Threadripper 1950X has much power, you should consider the processor’s mode.

Processor

AMD’s potent Threadripper CPU, created especially for high-performance computing, powers the Alienware Area51 Threadripper. For professionals, content creators, and gamers looking for unrivaled processing power, the Threadripper series is a clear winner.

With an astounding number of cores—typically between 16 and 64—the Threadripper processor offers outstanding multi-threaded performance. This makes it easier for users to do complex jobs like simulations, 3D rendering, and video editing. High clock rates, sophisticated architecture, and effective multi-level caching improve the processor’s performance, leading to a smoother and faster overall system responsiveness.

Graphics

Multimedia applications and games heavily rely on graphics. The graphics card in a game is in charge of producing realistic surroundings, intricate character models, and special effects. Strong graphics card support for anti-aliasing and higher resolutions improves visual quality, prevents screen tearing, and guarantees fluid gameplay. It makes virtual environments come to life, enhancing the gaming experience and enabling users to lose themselves entirely in their preferred games.

Top-tier NVIDIA and AMD graphics card solutions are available for the Alienware Area51 Threadripper. These cards offer remarkable performance and visual fidelity because of their vast VRAM, effective cooling systems, and state-of-the-art technologies.

Memory

With the Alienware Area51 Threadripper, users may customize the performance of their system to meet their unique requirements thanks to various memory options. The memory alternatives that are accessible play a vital part in improving the overall user experience, multitasking ability, and system responsiveness.

Memory, sometimes called Random Access Memory, is essential to a system’s operation. For data that the CPU utilized frequently, it is a temporary storage area that facilitates easy access and retrieval. More memory enables the system to store and retrieve more data quickly, reducing faster application launches, more fluid multitasking, and seamless data handling.

Cooling System

The powerful cooling system of the Alienware Area51 Threadripper is intended to maintain the machine at ideal temperatures, guaranteeing peak performance and longevity. To avoid overheating, minimize thermal throttling, and preserve system stability when performing taxing activities, adequate cooling is essential.

  • Liquid Cooling: Specific liquid cooling loops or all-in-one (AIO) liquid coolers are examples of liquid cooling solutions that offer superior thermal control. These systems dissipate heat from the CPU and other components using a radiator and liquid coolant. Better heat dissipation is provided by liquid cooling, which frequently results in lower operating temperatures and quieter operation.
  • Large Fans and Heat Sinks: Large fans and carefully positioned heat sinks could be included in the system to help drain heat from essential parts like the CPU and GPU. These fans disperse the heat produced by the components, while heat sinks with larger surface areas aid in air circulation.
  • Airflow Optimization: For adequate cooling, the chassis design of the system may have intake/exhaust vents and airflow channels tuned. This keeps the system’s temperature under control by ensuring a steady supply of cool air and removing hot air produced by the parts.
  • Fan Speed Control: Smart fan speed control systems minimize noise while maintaining ideal cooling performance by adjusting fan speeds in response to temperature. This enables quieter operation under modest workloads and increases fan speeds during heavy loads when the system needs more cooling.

Alienware Area-51 Threadripper: Still a Beast

Being out of date is a genuine and often swift reality in this business, but Alienware 51 Threadripper manages to exceed expectations and last longer than expected. Of course, people will say that it’s pricey and that there are more powerful rigs out there. I would say that those rigs aren’t even close to as good as my 4-year-old machine. Yes, I’ll pay the extra money.

The Area-51 is not a cheap rig; it is pricey and powerful, but after COVID-19 and lockdowns, it’s clear that powerful gaming rigs are a tech trend that will stick around.

Conclusion

The most powerful gaming PC we’ve ever examined is, without a doubt, the Alienware Area51 Threadripper Edition. But this PC is only for some, considering the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X’s price and complexity.

A gear like this will be beneficial for gamers who aspire to be the next big thing on Twitch or YouTube, especially if they think they need to gain the skills to create it themselves. Whether streaming, encoding, recording, or playing video, Threadripper was built for the most demanding mega-tasking. It can do all of these tasks simultaneously.

Aside from the Alienware Area51 Threadripper is an incredibly customizable and well-designed PC platform despite its high price. It’s worth checking out because not many pre-built gaming PCs are as stylish or easily extendable as this one.
